The Epidemic known as OBESITY
Obesity is a concern for both the developed as well as developing economies and the number of people affected by it goes well into millions!
It is said so commonly that it is a disorder caused due to overeating but its not simply a disease caused by eating too much only, it is a very grave risk that many individuals throughout the world suffer from .
As the number of people suffering from it increases it reaches pandemic proportions and alone in US about one third of the citizens are obese. it ranks amongst the highest causes of death and this is due to unhealthy living and bad food habits .in Britain over 58 percent of people are obese and the situation is not any different from what’s in states, a survey conducted in UK showed that 10 and 17 percent of males and females were heavier by more than 50 pounds than the average for that weight and height.
Obesity is not just a health concern it is also a bane on the economy in US alone the costs rank up around $ 117 billion, in Britain alone it costs more than the GDP of some of the lesser developed economies, obesity as an issue raises the risk for various disorders and decreases life expectancy by a decade, the diseases include hypertension heart attacks strokes renal failure osteoarthritis etc.
Why has the situation become so? The causative factors have been localized to a lack of exercise more sedentary lifestyles increasing dependence on fast food and more easier ways to travel and life becoming easy in more than one way today we do not need to physically invest ourselves in some work if e need to get I done its either a few clicks on the net or a few touches on some remote or control panel.
There is high correlation between the fat kids and TV its been seen those kids who are couch potatoes are obese as compared to those who don’t watch that many hours of television and are involved in outdoor activities.
The development of various industries and advent of processed foods also causes obesity as these are loaded with fatty stuff, and since the overall activity levels of individuals are at an all time low they have no way to get rid to these extra unwanted calories.
Obese people have a shorter lifespan, probably because they are at more risk of disorders like type two diabetes mellitus, hypertension, strokes, arthritis, obese people also suffer from insomnia and many other conditions, they also have a negative self image about themselves. so in today’s world it wouldn’t be wrong to say that obesity has reached global pandemic portions and steps must be taken to diffuse this ticking time bomb else it may be a threat to the existence of humans on this planet.
